The Industry & You

You often here, "You've got to have tough skin to be in this industry." Here at CDC, we say, "You've got to have the right mind to be in this industry." In this space, we will be posting different articles concerning your biggest questions, and concerns about the industry. Specifically, the Dancers and Stylist world. You will receive advice from the CDC staff, as well as well-known industry insiders.

CDC FAQ
Do they have a specific look, they are looking for?
This question is a bit difficult to answer because it has two answers. Yes and No! Sometimes castings at auditions already have an idea of whom and what they want for that specific part. However, surprises occur. I can’t tell you how many times, I’ve booked a gig and I was the complete opposite of what they were looking for. If you go to an audition and the casting was clear and definite for what they were looking for, understand that you might not get that job because of your looks. Sadly, that is just the nature of the business. But if you are defiant, which I’m sure a lot of you guys are, Go and Surprise them. Go and Kill that audition, Dance like you were made for that part, Remind them that sometimes the image they have is only that, an image. Interrupt their plans, book the gig and create a path for the rest to follow.

I’m great at free-styling but can’t pick up Choreography, where can I take some Great classes?
Being a great free-style dancer is an amazing gift. I’ve heard of dancers being able to pick up choreography at auditions and dreaded the free-style part. If you are having problems picking up choreography quickly, the answer to your question is practice, practice, practice. Get yourself into some dance classes and it will help with your memory. Don’t just stick to your genre of dancing; take classes that takes you out of your comfort zone. Remember, repetition equals consistency. That’s the whole idea behind practice. I promise you will get better. Be Relentless! As far as where you can take great classes, I suggest you become a CDC member. We have a list of amazing Dance studios that offers great classes with amazing choreographers!

What should I wear to Auditions?
I know you’ve all heard that it’s important to “Stand Out” at auditions and that’s very true but I’ve seen some crazy things at auditions. As far as clothing, Please wear some! Standing out doesn’t mean you have to “imply” nudity. Also you have to understand that this is a business and every business has categories. The way you dress may get you attention from an agency but once you are signed with that agency they might put you in a category that you don’t want to be in. It’s fine to be a music video model but as a professional dancer, if you are only being put in bikini’s to stand next to an artist, than you are not “Dancing.” As we’ve said before, CDC understands the difference between Passion and Fame Seekers! So if you want to stand out, be you! Bring out that Gift that God blessed you with, pay attention to different colors and how they look on you, experiment with your hair & make-up, then go in that closet and dress yourself into that pro we know you are. If you are still lost, don’t worry we’ve got you covered. CDC Style page is always filled with suggestions of what to wear along with list of up and coming designers. We are sure you will find something.

What Makes a Successful Stylist?
A successful stylist should never conform! Stick to your gift, your creative eye. Often in the industry a new stylist is persuaded to follow what’s in, instead of following what’s within so they end up being like a one hit wonder. Their work is not respected or appreciated. Like a season it comes and goes. Here at CDC, we believe that a successful stylist will not give their confidence away. They are unmovable when it comes to their vision.

I know how to dress people very well and I’m constantly told that I look like a model and stylist, do I really need to go to school for it?
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked this question. The truth is to have a successful styling career you need to have a real interest in fashion, trends and a keen eye for style. Most experts argue, “You either have this or you don't.” And I have to agree. If you are just putting clothes together and dressing yourself and not taking risks or have done any research on Fashion itself, you might want to take some classes. Taking a course in school will sharpen your natural skills. Stylists, in many ways, are like designers. Fashion is art to them. You have to find out what fashion is to you.
